BSA High Adventure Scheduling for 2010 and 2011
Here is some up-to-date, concise information about high adventure opportunities at Philmont, Northern Tier, and Sea Base. This good info was compiled by Doug Latimer, a Camping Promotions Committee volunteer. Please contact the high adventure bases for more information and if you have questions.
2010 Update
2010 – Philmont is contacting units on their waiting list; as of October 15, they were on number 380. Sea Base and Northern Tier have openings for 2010. Check their websites or call for availability.
Philmont has openings for the Kanik Adventures this winter.
Northern has openings for their Okpik Adventures this winter.
2011 Information
Registration for 2011 Philmont treks (for Southern Region units) are November 15-21 or November 29-December. Check the Philmont website for registration information.
Circle Ten Philmont 2011 Contingent Crew drawing for 24 crews (one 12-person crew per unit) will be held at the University of Scouting on January 9, during the lunch break.
Sign-up for the Circle Ten Northern Tier 2011 Contingent Crew will be after the Philmont drawing. Contingent crews will be out of Sommers Canoe Base, Ely, MN.
Northern Tier direct crew sign-up will be in April 2010.
Sea Base online lottery sign-up opens January 15-February 15.
New Adventure at Sea Base
The Florida Sea Base has added an Eco Adventure for 2010 and 2011. They will be giving crews an opportunity to learn about the unique environments that surround the Florida Keys.
New Adventures at Northern Tier
Canadian Fishing Expedition, based out of Don Rogert Canoe Base, Bissett, Manitoba, Canada
Kayaking Trek, based out of Don Rogert Canoe Base, Bissett, Manitoba, Canada
Ely Area Adventure Sampler – During August-October, you can use Sommers Canoe Base for your base of operation to tour several Ely area attractions including, Soudan Underground Mine, North American Bear Center, International Wolf Center, and the Dorothy Molter Museum.
Autumn Canoe Trips for Troops, Venturing Crews, and Adults – 5 to 10 day trips in August-October.
Autumn Canoe Trips for Troops/Families – 2 to 4 day trips in August-October, for 11 year-olds and older.
Backpacking Trips in the Boundary Waters – 2 to 4 day trips in August-October.
Fishing Trips – three options for 2 to 4 day trips in August-October.
Individual Opportunities Available at Philmont
Trail Crew Trek – The Trail Crew Trek Program (TCT) is an exciting new program at Philmont Scout Ranch. This 14-day experience will help prepare participants to develop a path that will help them achieve the William T. Hornaday Silver Award upon return to their units.
Rayado Trek – Older Scouts and Venturers who have mastered basic outdoor skilss should consider applying for the challenging and selective Rayado Trek program. Rayado is unparalleled for developing outdoor leadership, group dynamics, wilderness problem-solving, and advanced outdoor skills. Participants will experience more of Philmont’s backcountry and will have program opportunities not available to expedition campers.
R.O.C.S. (Roving Outdoor Conservation School) – The roving Outdoor Conservation School is an exciting program for Scouts and Venturers who have an interest in conservation and natural resource management. Each Crew will participate in activities in some of the following areas: forestry, fire ecology, fisheries management, wildlife management, geology, watershed management, and range management.
Mountain Treks – Mountain Treks are 6-day hiking expeditions through Philmont’s wilderness backcountry. Groups of 5-10 young people (male or female crews) are led by experienced rangers into the backcountry wilderness. Treks begin each Sunday and coincide with the Philmont Training Center conference schedule.
National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience – The National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE) is the ultimate in training experiences for youth leaders. It is conducted for older Scouts who have the potential for being on the staff of the council junior leader training or youth leader training conference.
Order of the Arrow Trail Crew – This program is a 14-day experience for Arrowmen to join together in cheerful service and the formation of lasting brotherhood on the trails at Philmont. Under the direction of the Philmont Conservation Department, experienced Philmont staff members with strong Order of the Arrow backgrounds will lead participants.
Ranch Hands – Ranch Hands is a program for Scouts and Venturers who have knowledge of horsemanship and horse care and want to expand their skills and experience. After an 8-day work session, the Ranch Hands crew embarks on an 8-day Cavalcade under the leadership of a horseman and wrangler.
